We report on extended source photometry of tidal debris / proto-dwarf galaxies in BVI ACS images of Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 31, obtained as a part of a Cycle 15 HST study of six compact groups. HCG 31 is a heavily studied compact group which shows signs of recent interaction, including tidal disruptions in at least three of its major galaxies as well as an extended tidal tail. Two of the concentrations in this tail are considered to be tidal dwarf galaxies. The data presented here are of sufficient depth and resolution to allow us to study the debris from this wreckage in greater detail than ever before. The colors of the debris suggest that at least some objects are several orders of magnitude younger than the dynamical time of the system ( 1 Gyr), implying that their stellar populations formed in an event triggered by tidal disruption. HCG 31 represents an critical phase the evolution of compact groups; the data contained here will shed light on the formation of dwarf galaxies and the evolution of stellar populations in the wake of tidal disruption events.
