The present conference on the optics of target acquisition, tracking, and pointing systems discusses topics in tracking system performance, critical technology components, and performance prediction. Attention is given to the improvement of the Spacelab Instrument Pointing System, a Space Shuttle-based space communications system, an interferometric encoder for high-resolution angular measurements, precision pointing and inertial line-of-sight stabilization using fine-steering mirrors, star trackers, and accelerometers, the focus drive mechanism for the IUE, representative optics and associated gimbal characteristics, and the stabilization of large mounts through auxiliary inertial instruments.
