The response of an isothermal solar type atmosphere to adiabatic
excitations by various small amplitude acoustic disturbances is studied
analytically. Both continuous and pulse excitations are discussed. It is
shown that wavetrains of random pulses may be responsible for the
excitation of the 3-min solar oscillations.
