The history of gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range from 100 GeV to 10 TeV is reviewed. Attention is given to observations of Cerenkov bursts from EAS, attempts to detect gamma rays from radio galaxies, and instruments employed in these investigations. Reliability criteria for gamma-ray source detection are discussed, along with ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar, the unidentified source Cas gamma-1, the radio galaxy Cen A, and the X-ray source Cyg X-3. The nature of ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray sources is considered, galactic disk emission in ultrahigh-energy gamma rays is examined, and possibilities for improving the detection technique for EAS Cerenkov bursts are evaluated.
