The authors present results of intensive photometry over two seasons for the bright Be star Achernar. Some medium-dispersion spectroscopy simultaneous with the photometry is also presented. The variability of the star in both radial velocity and light has a period of 1.26 day. The form of the light curve is complex and probably changes with time. There also seems to be a weak but significant variation of the strength of the Mg II λ4881 line with the same period. The authors discuss these observations in the light of the non-radial oscillation, rotational modulation and binary hypotheses.
