The authors report the first detection of acetone in interstellar space. They have identified the blended quadruplets JK+K- = 80,8 - 71,7 and 81,8 - 70,7, 110,11 - 101,10 and 111,11 - 100,10 in Sgr B2. The relative ratios of the quadruplets lines are compatible with thermal equilibrium. The derived column density of acetone is 5×1013cm-2, corresponding to an abundance relative to H2 5×10-11. This abundance can be explained by the formation of acetone via the radiative association of CH3+ and acetaldehyde.
