Accurate radio and optical positions have been obtained for a sample of 30 sources from the 4C and Ohio catalogues, whose radio structure has been found to be compact (less than 11 arcsec). This permitted optical identifications to be made purely on the criterion of positional coincidence. Eleven sources had no previously published identifications, a further seven are reidentifications which do not confirm previously published results based on inferior positional accuracy, and the remaining 12 confirm previously published identifications. It is concluded that combined radio-optical errors must be better than about 3 arcsec for reliable identifications to be made down to the limit of the Palomar Sky Survey plates. The present reidentifications are nearly always blank fields, especially for 'normal' spectrum sources. This suggests that, at least for compact radio sources with a spectral index of the order of 1 Jy at 2695 MHz, many claimed positive identifications in the literature may in fact be blank fields at the PSS plate limit.
