In a variability survey of M81 and its dwarf galaxy companion Holmberg IX, conducted with the Large Binocular Telescope between January and June 2007, we discovered a luminous (M_V ~ -7), long period (P=172 days) eclipsing binary system in Holmberg IX. The overcontact system is bound to be massive (M_1 >=15-20 Msun), and most likely composed by two yellow supergiants, a fairly unusual configuration. We propose to obtain spectroscopy of the system at quadrature dates with GMOS-N to confirm its binary nature and measure radial velocities that will constrain the masses and other fundamental parameters of the component stars. Massive binary systems like this, and another similar system in the SMC, may be the precursors of core- collapse supernovae with yellow progenitors that have been identified in pre-explosion archival images.
