Accurate photometry of the star 29 Cygni was obtained with the Fine Error Sensor (FES) onboard IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer). By using differential photometry, a photometric accuracy of 0.001 mag was achieved over a 7 hour observing period. The kind of photometric instabilities inherent in the FES are monitored by recording the counts received from guide stars during long exposures. In general, the variations are smooth and not a rapid function of time, which suggests that if their cause is detector wide instabilities then differential measures of two or more objects could be used to eliminate these variations and obtain photometry to a considerably higher accuracy than the canonical few hundredths of a magnitude obtained so far.
