An analytic expression is derived that gives the accuracy of star positions computed as the average of the positions taken from overlapping plates. The variance of such a position is given by the sum of two terms, a stochastic term corresponding to the measurements on the plate and a local systematic term that is introduced by the errors of the plate constants. This second term decreases slowly down to a nonvanishing limit with an increasing number of overlapping plates. For some visual arrangements of plates graphics are computed for direct use.
