The accuracy of field-star positions when obtained by a block adjustment is computed numerically by inversion of the normal matrices. Its dependence on all important parameters, such as the density of field and reference stars, the size of the block, and the reduction model, are discussed in detail. The accuracy obtained by this method is, in most cases, better than that achieved by single plate adjustments with added averaging. A further discussion treats the problem of rigidity of a block. The numerical calculations show that it is impossible to make a large block of several hundred plates rigid unless a standard density of reference stars at an appropriate weight is used. Since the plate constants produced by a block adjustment are much better than those of a single plate adjustment, it will often be necessary to use a more complicated reduction model for a block adjustment than one would adopt for the adjustment of single plates.
