The paper reviews various aspects of accretion onto magnetic white dwarfs. A theoretical model of the accretion process is presented, and ways in which the matter can penetrate the surface of the star are considered. An MHD description of the accretion column is presented, and the emission spectra of magnetic white dwarfs are investigated in the framework of plasma radiation mechanisms in a strong magnetic field.
