Calculations and analysis based on the theory of accretion of jet streams are used to confirm the view that the initial physical and chemical conditions in the asteroid region led to a slow growth of planetesimals in the region and a transfer of accretable matter to the Jupiter region, resulting in the planetesimals stopping at the "half-finished" stage and eventuallq forming only asteroids and not major planets. The growth of the planetesimals is calculated, and analysis shows that interlopers from the Jupiter region which may have had orbits extending out to the Mars region could have accreted matter from the asteroid region. Analysis of the angular momentum problem shows that the planetesimals could have returned to the Jupiter region and that the orbit of Jupiter would not have changed as a result.
