It is determined that the mean free paths of particles in rich clusters of galaxies exceed the diameters of the galaxies. The rate of accretion of such a collisionless gas by a galaxy at rest is estimated to reach approximately 5 solar masses per year. The estimated rate of accretion shows that the galaxy acquires a mass of gas comparable with its own mass during the complete time of its existence. These findings indicate that the process of adding hot intergalactic gas to a galaxy must play an important part in its evolution.
