A hypothesis concerning gas accretion predominantly in one plane of a spiral galaxy is proposed on the basis of the observed concentration of dwarf satellites of the Galaxy, distant globular clusters, and high-velocity H I regions in a plane nearly perpendicular to that of the Galaxy. It is shown that such asymmetric gas accretion can produce a spiral structure whose properties are in good agreement with observations. Other galaxies exhibiting evidence of such accretion are also examined. A comparison with the conclusions of spiral-density-wave theory indicates that differences in the forms of optical spirals predicted by that theory and by the present mechanism are small, and it is noted that both theories interpret spiral arms as star-formation waves.
