The changes in the axial rotation period and radius of a magnetized compact star in a binary system which occur due to accretion onto the star of mass with angular momentum from the surface of its noncompact companion is investigated. For the case of the millisecond pulsars in binary X-ray sources, it is found that the predicted values of the period time derivative can be positive, negative, or even vanish (depending upon the values of the accretion rate and the absolute luminosity), and that they fall in the 10 to the -21st to 10 to the -17th sec/sec range. The corresponding rate of change of radius (negative or positive) is shown to fall in the 0.001-0.1 cm/yr range. Results suggest that accretion-induced noncatastrophic contraction is impossible.
