The author presents arguments which suggest that accretion disks around black holes and neutron stars may self-generate ordered magnetic fields, from currents associated with orbital motion of the disk material. This leads one to expect electromagnetic extraction of the rotational energy of the disk, and it is therefore proposed that such a magnetic field is the ultimate source of various nonthermal phenomena in accreting ultracompact objects.
