Theoretical concepts of the formation and properties of accretion disks in close binary systems are compared with observations of disks in Algols. The standard accretion disk model is reviewed. Consideration is given to aspects of disk formation such as particle trajectories, conditions and mechanisms of disk formation, and the structure of the stream. Observed emission lines in Algols are compared with other binaries using the r1 vs. q diagram (Kaitchuck et al., 1985).
