A survey of accretion disk models around compact objects is presented, in particular the accretion onto white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. Both the thin disk as well as thick disk models are discussed, in addition to the feasibility of whether either of these can be applied in the astrophysical systems. The crucial role of magnetic field in facilitating the formation of accretion disks in neutron stars is indicated. The prime significance of accretion disks in the generation of soft and hard X-rays is also discussed. Thick disk models are found to explain the observations of active galactic nuclei, in addition to collimated and persistent jets in some of the radio sources.
