We investigate the vertical structure of an accretion disc corona which will be formed by the illumination of a disk by X-rays from a compact object in a binary system. The transfer of radiation is calculated self-consistently using escape probability formalism. We have calculated emission line spectra formed in the corona, transition region and chromosphere in the optical, UV and X-ray range. Such emission lines can be compared with observations and serve as an important diagnostic of the physical and geometrical properties of X-ray binary systems. These results can also be applied to probe systems such as active galactic nuclei and cataclysmic variables.
