A self-consistent model for the outer regions of accretion disks in active galaxies is presented and the contribution from the disk to line intensities and profiles is investigated. The relevance of the results to the O VI 1035 and N V 1240 line strengths is discussed, showing that there is no 'O III problem'. A comparison is carried out between the line profiles predicted by this model, which are found to depend on the alpha parameter of the disk, and the observed profile of 3C390.3, which appears to be dominated by a disk. It is found that viscous heating can raise the disk surface temperature to 100 million K, well above the inverse Compton temperature for the assumed spectrum, implying the existence of a disk wind within the broad line region.
