An acceleration mechanism that was first advanced to account for astrophysical phenomena (mainly, acceleration of cosmic ray particles and relativistic electrons in synchrotron jets), is briefly reviewed, and it is shown that a similar mechanism can account for acceleration in the plasma focus. In the plasma focus, current flows through annular channels are defined by radial double layers. Pinching constricts the current channel, reducing the number of current carriers locally, and an instability of drift velocity quickly denudes the region of free charges. A displacement current density is then required in order to maintain the current. As the magnetic field loses energy to the axial electric field, the pinch relaxes, permitting full current to flow again. Thereafter, the cycle repeats quasi-periodically.
