The abundances of the REEs in the evolved Am star HR 178 is determined. It is shown that in HR 178 the REEs follow the odd-even effect without ambiguity in its abundance distribution as a function of atomic number. A general enhancement by about a factor of 20 is observed with respect to the solar abundance pattern. This result may permit the origin of the REE enrichment in CP stars to be determined.
