Results are reported for four image-tube scans of the bright high-redshift QSO B2 1225+31 in the wavelength ranges from 3200 to 4100 A, 3700 to 4900 A, 6000 to 7200 A, and 7000 to 8700 A. Column densities are measured for several species in the z = 1.7941 absorption-line system (system A) of this object. The results obtained suggest that system A arises in an intervening galaxy and that the heavy elements are underabundant in this system as compared with the sun. It is concluded that there is little, if any, dust in the system A gas.
