The elemental abundance of stars with planets (SWPs) has been studied in an attempt to identify, a) processes favorable for planetary formation, or b) products of planetary formation. The observation of a higher mean metallicity in SWPs (compared to field stars) may be the result of high primordial abundance, ingestion of high-Z material, or some other source. Open clusters provide tremendous advantages over field stars in searching for elemental signatures of planet formation because the stellar parameters are much better constrained and the stellar evolutionary stage is known quite accurately. In the long term, we can study the evolution of these processes because we know the age of the clusters. We propose to use HET/HRS and KPNO-4m Echelle to determine precise relative abundances for 52 single members of the Praesepe star cluster to look for the signatures of planetary formation and to distinguish between primordial high metallicity for SWPs and the accretion of planetessimals.
