A spectroscopic study is conducted at 5000-6200 A for three features in results of photoelectric VI(KC) photometry that has yielded structural parameters for the giant branch in nine clusters. The features are: (1) TiO bands closely correlated with V-I color, providing no independent abundance criterion; (2) Mg b lines which depend on abundance but lose sensitivity at high metal content; and (3) Na D lines which are adversely affected by interstellar absorption and atmospheric emission, showing a wide scatter at a given color in 47 Tuc as well as strong positive correlation with metal abundance. These and other parameters order the clusters in a way that is at variance with the results of abundance analyses based on high dispersion spectroscopy.
