The absorption spectra of H2 pairs are calculated from first principles, using highly correlated wave functions for the computation of the induced-dipole moment and the vibrational dependences of the isotropic part of the interaction potential. The comparison of the measurements with the fundamental theory shows a high degree of consistency. The observed agreement is within the range of experimental uncertainties, which is estimated to amount to about 10 percent for the best measurements available. The results are of interest in connection with the modeling of radiative transfer in the atmospheres of the planets and cool stars.
