MHD waves are generated in the interaction of the solar wind with the geomagnetic field. In the present paper, a theoretical analysis is presented of the upper-atmospheric absorption of MHD waves, propagating perpendicular to an external uniform magnetic field, and the efficiency of MHD-wave absorption as a heating mechanism for the neutral component of the upper atmosphere is evaluated. It is determined that, in the ionospheric height range of 100-200 km, MHD-wave heating of the atmosphere is comparable to solar-UV heating.
