The variation in the central depth (R) of an absorption line on the disk of a planet surrounded by an inhomogeneous, isotropically scattering atmosphere is analyzed. It is assumed that the single-scattering albedo at line center varies according to a simple exponential law. It is shown that the absorption line depth may decrease or increase in going from the center of the disk to the limb, depending on the parameter of the exponential model. Comparison of model predictions with Jupiter observations shows the model to be adequate.
