The internal absorption and absorption gradients along the major and minor axes of five spiral galaxies and one irregular galaxy are investigated to analyze the universality of dark-cloud surface distributions. The technique for studying the surface distribution of dark clouds in M31 by Issa (1990, 1991) is applied to the spirals NGC 253, NGC 2841, NGC 5194, NGC 5236, and NGC 7331 and to the irregular NGC 5195. An equation is derived to represent the absorption caused by the clouds, and periodicity is shown to be a significant feature in dark-cloud surface distributions.
