The authors show that the absorption dips observed in soft X-ray light curves of several AM Herculis systems probably result from occultations of the accreting polecap by distant (≥1010cm) parts of the accretion stream. The phasing of the dips suggest that the field lines are distorted from dipolar by the ram pressure of the stream. The authors discuss the implications for the system geometry, and accretion and spindown torques of the white dwarf.
