The origin and nature of the Intrinsic Absorption Lines (IALs), both Associated Absorption Lines (AALs) and Broad Absorption Lines (BALS), in the spectra of AGN are still open questions. In this study we investigate the possibility of the IAL gas being the emission-line nebulae in Seyfert galaxies, such as the Narrow Line Regions (NLRs), the superwinds of starbursts, or the jet-entrained material in radio galaxies. The IALs are seen when one looks down through the line-emitting gas towards the continuum source. We rely on already published results for the ionization state and total hydrogen column density of the emission-line gas. We then perform photoionization simulations to calculate the ionic column densities of important species such as C IV, N V, and O VI; species whose UV absorption lines are the most important IALs. These columns are then translated into equivalent widths of the corresponding ALs, given a velocity structure. For example, using physical parameters from the NLR of NGC 4151 we find that the the ionic column densities can be high enough to lead to substantial absorption. The gas kinematics from existing observations show that line profiles similar to those of BALs could be obtained. We discuss the implications of the results in the context of absorption in quasars.
