We explore the possibility of using background galaxies to measure absolute proper motions in the HUDF. Since galaxies are not point sources, we cannot measure their positions using PSFs. Rather, we must develop a template for each galaxy that can be used to measure a consistent position for it in each image. We find that there are enough measurable galaxies in a 1200 second image in F606W and F775W to define an astrometric reference frame to better than 0.02 WFC pixel (1 mas). We report absolute proper motions (using a baseline of 3 years) of several high-velocity white dwarf candidates. This concept could work for any deep field that has enough extragalactic sources and open up some interesting possibilities for pencil-beam surveys.
