QSOs need to be found in order to establish a zero proper motion (PM) reference frame for a sizeable absolute PM survey of distant halo stars found at large galactocentric radii to ~ 20-25 kpc. Moderately deep UBVRI imaging will be performed in order to locate these quasar candidates with subsequent confirmation by multi-object spectroscopy. This modest time request is part of a larger program to measure the absolute PMs for stars in a total of six fields, selected specifically for galactic structure studies. Stellar PMs are being measured to very faint magnitudes, B ~ 23. The spectroscopic confirmation of quasars in each field is mandatory otherwise severe systematic errors are introduced in the establishment of the reference frame due to the inclusion of objects that move (i.e., stars). The quasar candidates are selected from their peculiar positions in 2-color diagrams relative to that of the stellar loci. Due to the nature of the plate material (from the Blanco 4m PFC) from which the PMs are derived and the twenty-year baseline, practically all stars will have detectable motions.
