A Fourier analysis of about 7000 observations of the horizontal solar diameter obtained during a 36-year period of reduced magnetic activity (from 1683 to 1718) is presented. A clear signature of the solar cycle corresponding to a 9.4-year periodicity is found. Other periodicities noted include intervals of 2-3 years, 17 months, 182.5 days, and 155 days. The amplitudes of these periodicities are at the 4-5 sigma level. Similar periodicities are observed in solar and terrestrial indices obtained from modern observations, suggesting that these periodicities are absolute. The results also imply that the solar cycle was still operating during the Maunder (1894) minimum, even though the degree of magnetic activity observed at the solar surface was weak.
