High resolution far U.V. spectra of the sun observed during the SKYLAB mission exhibited both broadband extinction by O2 and narrowband self-absorption by O as the spacecraft passed through sunset. The data were analyzed using Discrete Inverse Theory to retrieve the O2 and O concentrations. Excellent agreement with the MSIS-86 model was found for O2 and moderate agreement for O. Both determinations were made with high absolute accuracy, thereby demonstrating the power of absorption experiments.
