Absolute visual magnitudes and stellar luminosities are calculated for 13 nearby bright stars from integrated fluxes and measured parallaxes. These fundamentally determined magnitudes are compared with those derived from apparent magnitudes and from main sequence fitting. The statistical data has a systematic bias towards overestimating the stellar luminosities by about 30%.
