The parameters lambda 1 and D of the BCD system are calibrated in effective temperature and bolometric magnitude for O and B stars. Lambda is a parameter linked to the position of the Balmer discontinuity; D is the value of this discontinuity. Verification and/or improvements expected from Hipparcos parallaxes are discussed. The difference between the bolometric and visual absolute magnitude given by these calibrations is compared to the bolometric correction deduced from model calculations. General agreement is good except for late type B giants. For these, a number of Hipparcos parallaxes will be obtained with a precision large enough to find out the origin of this anomaly.
