From a combination of both galactic and LMC data, an improved visual absolute-magnitude calibration for W-R stars is proposed. The occurrence of W-R stars in the OB associations and H II regions of the LMC is also investigated as well as the frequency of W-R binaries and the relative number of WN to WC type stars. The systematic tendency for WN 8 stars to deviate from the general behaviour of late WN-type stars is underlined. The peculiarities of the W-R star distribution in the LMC, i.e. the complete lack of WC-types other than WC 5 and the large number of early WN-type stars, are interpreted as a consequence of the metal deficiency of this galaxy. No new clues about the influence of the initial mass function (IMF) on the W-R star population of a galaxy could be derived, however.
