Absolute calibration of devices intended to study the space environment, such as ion mass spectrometers and neutral atom sensors, requires a known flux of ions or energetic neutral atoms. For use in the calibration of the IBEX-Hi energetic neutral atom sensor, we have designed, built, and characterized an absolute beam flux monitor. Secondary electrons generated by particles passing through a thin carbon foil are collected by channel electron multipliers (CEMs) located on either side of the foil. The ratio of count rates of secondary electrons in the individual CEMs to the coincident count rate yields the total beam flux of incoming neutral atoms or ions. No explicit absolute calibrations are required, and the performance of the device is not sensitive to changes in detection efficiency of either CEM.
