It is shown that the weak positive-energy condition is violated by massive Dirac particles interacting with a Kerr-Newman black hole. Arguments are also given for breakdown of the same condition when a black hole is immersed in an arbitrary electromagnetic field. This confirms Bekenstein's conjecture that it is the breakdown of the weak energy condition which is responsible for the violation of Hawking's area-nondecrease theorem by fermions in general.
