Using 1-minute Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG) magnetograms from 2001 to 2007, we characterize the changes in the photospheric longitudinal magnetic field during 42 X-class and 46 M-class flares. In each case, we find one or more sites near the flare where clear and permanent stepwise field changes occurred. We investigate field intensity changes, bulk flux changes and changes in the strength and direction of the magnetic gradient. These changes are examined in relation to flare X-ray flux intensity, position on the disk and mean relative motions of the magnetic polarities.
