The fate of the dissolved reactive silicate in River Conway water as it passes through the estuarine portion of the river has been studied. There is evidence of rapid abiological removal of between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of the reactive silicate from solution. This removal is dependent on the presence of particulate inorganic material in suspension. In the Conway Estuary the particulate material in suspension appears to be produced by tidal stirring of the estuarine bottom deposits. Laboratory experiments have confirmed that both suspended matter and sea water electrolytes must be present for the reaction to occur. The sorption process is only partially a classical adsorption. A large proportion of the sorbed silicate appears to be more firmly bound to the solid phase.
