Fermat's principle is used to examine the aberrations of various types of curved constant-period transmission gratings. It is shown that optimal performance is achieved with a grating which is assembled from individual constant-period facets which form a nonclosed surface and which operates sufficiently free of third-order aberrations, with application to X-ray astronomy. For this geometry, primary coma and astigmatism are proportional to the facet size and, hence, may be adapted to the angular resolution of large Wolter type I telescopes typical of those in construction or under design for satellite and Spacelab applications.
