Coudé spectrograms of dispersion 8 and 16 Å/mm of the variable Herbig Ae/Be star AB Aur are discussed. The material was obtained on 8 different nights between 1970 and 1981 and covers the range 3450-4950 Å. From this material and a 5.3 Å/mm echelle spectrogram of Hα and NaD a stellar wind, possibly decelerated, and a relatively compact emitting region close to the star is suggested. The later region is variable on time scales of less than a day. The heliocentric radial velocity of AB Aur of +21±10 km s-1 is in agreement with +15.3±0.6 km s-1 observed for the associated molecular cloud. The possibility that AB Aur is a member in a close binary system is not supported.
