The Workshop A4 on Approximation Methods was divided into three sessions. The first, on post-Newtonian methods, focussed on efforts to calculate the equations of motion and gravitational waveform of inspiralling compact binaries to very high order in a post-Newtonian approximation (essentially in powers of (v/c) ~ (Gm/rc2)1/2). Progress was reported on the effort to reach third post-Newtonian order and beyond. The second session focussed on perturbations of black holes and stars, with particular interest in linking black hole perturbations with numerical relativity, and in the unstable r-modes of relativistic stars. The final session was devoted to miscellaneous perturbation methods.
