The COMPTEL source GRO J1753+57 is probably the most extreme case of a MeV peaked spectrum. Because of its spectrum and variability, this source, still undetected by EGRET, was initially suspected to be a MeV blazar. However, no Bl Lac or quasar inside the 2σ COMPTEL error is known. A first search for an optical counterpart provided unlikely candidates. During this first study, an optical counterpart was found for the flat-spectrum radio source 1755+578, but no spectroscopic identification could be made. In more recent campaigns, we have obtained optical spectra for this object, one with the 6-m telescope at Zelenchuk, which indicate that this radio source is a quasar with a redshift of 2.1. Given its radio and optical characteristics, the quasar 1755+578 is the most likely counterpart of GRO J1753+57, suggesting this is indeed a very bright MeV blazar.
