We present preliminary results of a XMM-Newton spectral variability study of the 22 brightest unabsorbed AGN of the sky. Total rms spectra are used to study the Fe K band variability. We observe total rms spectra with power law shapes and with spectral indices steeper than the mean spectral indices. For each source the rms spectral index is consistent with being constant with flux. This suggest that the main spectral variations, on the probed timescales (of few ks), are primarily due to a steep power law (Γ = 2-2.3) varying in normalisation only and by a significant (R~3) constant flat component, broadly consistent with a reflection-like spectrum.
