Hst Proposal Id #5516 Stellar Populations

Scientific paper

R136a has historical importance in that Hubble images of of the stellar cluster, taken in July 1990 by the GHRS team, were the first scientifically interesting pictures taken by Hubble. The 40S picture showed without a doubt the superiority of Hubble over groundbased telescopes. A few days later, there was a press conference based on this picture of R136a, and the first ERO program was started in ernest. We now propose to repeat the imagery of R136a with WFPCs. The July 1990 picture was a 40S image taken with PC6 at F368M. This time, we will take a series of 3 pictures (5S, 10S, and 20S) pictures with PC1 at F336W. We will compare the new with: (1) the original July 1990 picture; (2) "deep" PC exposures that were the basis of study by Campbell et al. (1992), and Malumuth & Heap (1993). (3) the predicted field, as shown by Heap in an April press release and by Heap & Malumuth (1992). These pictures are also essential as "early acquisition" pictures for the GHRS ERO program on R136a.
