Historically, spectral data from space-based observatories has been archived in a variety of FITS formats with metadata described using a variety of FITS keywords. For example, some HST heritage instruments like GHRS and FOS, even stored fluxes, wavelengths, and error estimates in separate files. With the advent of the VO, the SED data model, and the SSA protocol, we are proposing to create a standard spectral container for HST data that can be applied to other missions as well. The container will include additional metadata (when necessary) and serve as a translation layer between the current file formats and the standardized VO format. The poster describes the current status of this container, and briefly discusses areas where the current data model may not allow sufficient flexibility.
